Lyrics

Richard Stekol wrote a brilliant song in his award winning "America Walking By", and we were moved the first time we heard it when Iain Matthews presented it to us last year. It's a song of encouragement and hope, in a time of questioning that in which we have placed our faith. ls

Mama will not kiss her son - She runs away from everyone
Lies in bed all night and day - Struck by what she cannot say
She raised him from her bended knee - Ran in the field and swam in the sea
Combed his hair out of his face - And taught him how to love this place
And tucked him in when the night was cool - Sang him to sleep, sent him to school
Gave her only to this one horse town - And today they’re gonna lay him down

CHORUS
Well bundle up and dry your eyes
There’ll be tear drops left to cry
Mama hold your head up high
There goes America walking by
There goes America walking by

Poppa will not let us in - He’s locked himself in his room again
Framing pictures from yesterday - He’s got nothing left to say
Worked in the train yard sun to sun - Came home when the work was done
Picked his boy up over head - And listened to each word he said
And now those words weave a web - Each night when he goes to bed
And in the richest dream of all - The boy comes when his poppa calls

CHORUS

Sonny can’t come home tonight - But we’ll be leaving on the light
We’re still gonna save his place - We’re awake, just in case
We’re praying through our rage - To turn back one single page
Our world is torn apart - But we’ll be gathered in our heart,
Folks blow kisses from the porch - But there’s no fire can light the torch

Children hang your head and cry
There goes America walking by - There goes America walking by
Mama hold your head up high
There goes America walking by - America's walking by
